How to Get Your Rajkot Business Into Google Maps Results

By Hitesh Rank · Published · 4 min read

Key takeaways

  • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and you cannot pay for a better position.
  • Choose categories for what you sell, not for what people search. We learned this from our own profile.
  • Ask every customer for a review, never offer anything in return, and reply to reviews personally.
  • Use exactly the same name, address and phone number everywhere your business is listed.

How Google decides who appears

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your Business Profile matches what someone searched for.
  • Distance: how far you are from the person searching.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, online and off.

Google is also clear that “there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking.” Everything below works on relevance and prominence, because distance you can’t change.

Step 1: complete and verify your profile

Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up. Check every field:

  • Business name exactly as it appears on your signboard and invoices.
  • Full address, with the correct pin on the map.
  • Phone number and website.
  • Regular hours, plus special hours for Diwali and other holidays.
  • Attributes such as parking or wheelchair access, where they apply.
  • Verification, which tells Google you are authorised to manage the business.

Step 2: choose categories for what you sell

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals, so choose it for the customers you want.

We learned this on our own profile. Searches for “IT company” brought us plenty of views but very few calls, and the search results for that phrase are dominated by job and internship sites, so many of those searchers were looking for work, not for a website. We kept “Website designer” as our primary category instead of chasing the most-searched label, and use secondary categories only for things we actually sell.

Step 3: reviews, the right way

Reviews are a big part of prominence, and they are what people read before they call. Google’s rules are strict:

  • Ask every customer, not only the ones you expect to be happy. Google provides a review link and QR code you can share.
  • Never offer anything in return. Google treats discounts or gifts for reviews as fake content.
  • Never write reviews for customers, or ask staff and family to post them.
  • Reply personally, especially to critical reviews. Google advises against the same “thank you” to everyone.

A simple WhatsApp message to each client with your review link, sent personally, works better than any campaign.

Step 4: photos and updates

Add real photos: your office or shop front, your team at work, your products. Photos help people recognise you when they arrive and show what you do before they call. Post updates when you launch something new or have holiday hours, so the profile looks alive.

Step 5: the same details everywhere

Search engines and AI tools cross-check your details across the web. If Justdial has your old address, IndiaMART spells your name differently and your website shows another number, they trust all of them less.

  • Use one exact version of your name, address and phone number everywhere.
  • Fix old addresses on Justdial, IndiaMART and other directories.
  • Add your business to Bing Places too. Bing feeds several AI search tools, including ChatGPT search.
  • Link your profile to the matching page of your website, not just the home page, where it makes sense.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding “Best” or keywords to your business name. It breaks Google’s guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
  • Choosing a category because it gets more searches, not because it describes what you sell.
  • Leaving reviews unanswered for months.
  • Changing your phone number or address without updating every listing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay Google to rank higher in Maps?+

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above results, but they don’t change your organic position.

How many reviews do I need?+

There is no magic number. Steady, genuine reviews over time, with replies from you, matter more than a sudden burst.

Can I give a discount in exchange for a review?+

No. Google prohibits incentives such as discounts or free services in exchange for reviews and treats them as fake content.
